Rap mogul Jay Z's Roc Nation roster has reportedly lost one artist in the form of indie pop rockerM.I.A. after she posted an unexpected departure announcement on New Year's Eve.
While details are slim on what motivated her decision, M.I.A. broke the news via her Twitter page.
"2013 i dlted old tweet to bring u this. im leaving @RocNation . Thank to everyone who supported the M.I.A #MATANGI LP. HAPPY NEW YEAR | 2014," M.I.A. tweeted December 31. (M.I.A.'s Twitter)
Various media outlets have speculated on what may have forced the move.
M.I.A. signed with the management side of Jay Z's company in 2012, but Roc Nation executives clashed with filmmaker Steve Loveridge, the man behind an upcoming documentary about the controversial musician, after leaking early footage of the project online. He quit in July (13), but M.I.A. announced the director was back onboard the movie in August (13). The British rapper leaves a management roster which includes Shakira, Rihanna and Kylie Minogue. The news comes weeks after indie rock singer Grimes joined forces with Jay's growing team.
Grimes, indie rock's pop star, has signed a management deal with Roc Nation, the label announced today. Roc Nation, under the stewardship of Jay Z, manages a number of artists from across the musical spectrum including rappers (Meek Mill, Wale), producers (DJ Mustard, Ludwig Goransson, No ID, Timbaland), engineers (Kuk Harrell, Rob Kinelski) and songwriters (Shea Taylor, BOOTS). The label also manages a number of acts from outside the worlds of hip-hop and major label pop, like M.I.A., Matthew Dear and Haim. Grimes is expected to release her fourth solo album--and first since her 2012 breakthroughVisions--in 2014. (Complex)
Recently, Atlanta rapper Jeezy made headlines for joining Jigga's expanding Roc Nation team.
It appears that Jeezy has aligned himself and possibly his CTE imprint with Roc Nation. Jeezy took a picture with Jay Z, with the caption reading: "It's Official Now. CTE x Roc Nation x It's Tha World." As of now, details of the deal have not been revealed. In the past week, Jeezy has expressed frustration with his own label situation at Def Jam Records. He has threatened to provide fans with "an early X-Mas present" if the situation doesn't change. Meanwhile, Jeezy's CTE World label has previously been under Atlantic Records. (Complex)
