Hip-hop pioneer MC Lyte recently opened up on her HIV/AIDS awareness campaign and why it is vital for African Americans, specifically, to realize the global epidemic.

"I'm just happy to be a participant with any organization that's going to make people aware of the disease that's killing us [Black people] by the millions," Lyte said in an interview. "There are so many sick in our backyards right now. There's not just [Project] RED but many other organizations that I work with that are all about bringing awareness [and] educating the youth about protecting themselves. ... One, for some reason we think it can't affect us. Two, some of us really don't find life worth living, and there's a couple of other reasons that I can think of but the bottom line is we get the message to people. I was going to say kids, but really it's adults as well, so that they'll take it seriously." (Hip Hop Wired)

A few days ago, Lyte was spotted with other celebrities at a Project RED event.

The vodka was flowing and the soulful sounds of Mary J. Bligeemanated from the speakers at the (Belvedere) RED Pre-Grammy Party at Avalon in Hollywood on Thursday night. MJB shimmered in gold on the red carpet, posing with comedienne Chelsea Handlerat the all-red affair, which benefitted the Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa. Kelis, MC Lyte, Sheila E., and Paris Hiltonwere among the celebrity sightings. While waiting for the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul to make her entrance, guests sipped on signature Belvedere cocktails including pink mojitos and St. Clements, whileDJ Ruckus provided the soundtrack. Over the fall, West Coast rapper Lil B penned his "I Got AIDS (AIDS Awareness Song)" to spark people's attention.

Lil B's unrelenting stream of music videos might be slowed down for a bit -- and by "a bit" I mean like two or three days -- because dude's apparently got a new mixtape dropping soon. It's called BasedGod Velli and it depicts the Bay Area rapper looking just like Tupac, who you might recall dropped an album under the name Makaveli. The word is that Lil B's new tape is due out today or tomorrow, but until that time comes you can get a feel for the project right now with "I Got AIDS." It's his very own AIDS awareness song and it mostly focuses on the Based God urging his listeners to get tested for STDs. While we've heard him dwell in this kind of lyrical territory before, it still will be interesting to hear how this track fits into the entirety of BasedGod Velli. (Prefix Mag)

In 2009, Young Money star Drake was seen in an advertisement for Stay Strapped Condoms informing fans of the importance of using protection during sex.

"Yo what's going on man," he said in the advertisement. "This is your boy Drake and I'm out in the H-Town. You already know. Get informed, not infected. Use strapped condoms and save lives. I approve this message. Yeah." (YouTube)
